What would you do with 8 gigs of ram?

Dang! 8 *gigs???* 512 megabytes seems to be perfectly adequate for my machine… (Then again, I’m guessing that you do tons of CGI work on your machines, while I just do the occasional scan and make the occasional Ava/Sig set on mine…)

You’d cry, my home machine’s had 2GB’s of RAM since 2003, the Mac Pro it’s being replaced by next year will be sporting between 4-8 depending on my budget :)

RAM is your friend :)

Are Macs not capable of using virtual memory?

Yes, and very good at it I might add. However when working with large media files, page-outs will kill the mood…

Hmm, can we say, oh, ESD?

(sorry to be the party pooper)

Wait, isn’t ESD a mac specific page layout program? Kinda like Adobe InDesign? Sorry, i know nothing about macs, why does ESD chew up so much ram? (Nevermind the fact that i’m having to frikkin’ draft a project in Illustrator no less on a mac and it’s driving me nuts… don’t ask. It’s not even an illustrator class, and no, using cad, solidworks, pro/e, 3Dmax, etc. etc. etc. etc. is not an option. argh…stupid outdated class.. at least it’s Lego’s)

are you joking?

if not, esd = electrostatic discharge. static electricity isn’t good for ram, although it’s not nearly as bad today as it was back in the pre-sdram days

Uhm, no. Actually i wasn’t joking. I know was electrostatic discharge is, just never seen it called by the accronym before. Good to know.

Yeah, I agree with TheMacHobbit.

Mmmm, ESD.

(Work at a AppleStore, do upgrades, cringe at the messes people cause by ESD)

8 gigs eh? I’d probably run a few of the latest games i could at one time, so I didn’t have to bother switching…then I’d get some wacom tablet time going…then slack off and do some of that WoW playing…then watch a bunch of vids on Youtube.

So pretty much what I do on any normal day, just cutting some of the crappy wait times.

Well… after the drooling stopped and the RAM dried out…(some odd 8hrs or so) would some do some integrated testing. Ala Quake, Oblivion (pick your eye candy poison) etc. Then maybe try to render FF the movie in realtime.

16 GB is crazy. Your filesystem starts caching 4, 5 GB files in its virtual file system, and you forget you have processes running using up 8 or 9 GB of RAM.

I wonder if the next generation will believe us when we tell them about swap space.

Child: “You mean you’d write part of the programs’ memory to disk while they were running? Wouldn’t that make the computer unusable?”
Parent: “Yeah, pretty much.”

Swap isn’t going away anytime soon, given the way file and application sizes keep growing along with RAM sizes. But hopefully flash memory will take over swap duties from magneto-optical drives in the not-too-distant future. That will make swapping a lot faster.

Your’e swapping to a MO drive ? Cool. That makes your po/pi latency what ? A full second ? So your computer pretty much runs like a Sinclair Spectrum ? ;-)

Incidentally, IF I had 8GB of RAM, I’d be doing what ? Well, “half of what I already do with 16GB” sits on top of my mind :-)

Hey, i’ve got 16 on my PC, am I crazy ?

yeah, probabaly…..

nethertheless, I started my first PC with 256kb of ram and a 20 mb hard disk, and now i have one with 16gig of ram, and 8 TB of drive…. technology….

Besides photoshop still slows sometimes even with 16gig, that’s why mac are bests, I guess

Hm… 8 gigs, lets see, I’d put 1 gig in my MBP so its was at full and then… TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!! Or not. Though my boss and I have plotted a world takeover using 4 Mac Pros, 3 slaved to 1.
