There’s been an ongoing shitstorm in which Vice President Cheney tried to contend that his office was not part of the Executive Brance, and he therefore did not need to submit to an Executive Order that all classified documents go to the National Archives. The gall of such a claim is astounding – not because it’s unexpected (no, in that sense it’s no surprise), but rather because it’s asinine. What it boils down to is that Cheney’s lawyers were trying to apply some flimsy legalese to the Constitution.
Well, Congressmen were having none of it. Their response was that if the Office of the Vice President wasn’t part of the Executive Branch, well, then – it didn’t need to be included in the Executive budget. Ouch.
In light of that, the claim has unsurprisingly been retracted. If I sound like I’m not even making an attempt to hide my bias, well – I’m not. I try to keep bias out of my posts as much as possible, but this whole story has been patently stupid. There’s nothing conservative or liberal about this – it’d be an idiot move no matter who’s in Office.

Interesting post. I understand your position of staying neutral on this kind of issues but there are times when one has to explode and express their indignation about certain issues.
Yeah, I hear ya, Ananth. No matter what a person’s political affiliation is, I’d hope they’d be outraged by the idea of government officials holding themselves to be above the laws of our country.
What I’m wondering about is what does he have to hide to go to such extents that he tries to make his branch seem like it is not part of the executive branch.
Coke deals? Heroine underground? Shooting more people in the face? What is cheney hiding? Maybe that Executive branch is what is funding all of these illegal activities.
Now im just being stupid but if one of these is the correct answer I’m demanding a statue.
I agree with you completely. This sort of stunt is the poster child of all that is stupid, regardless of one’s political affiliation.
They should make statues of Cheney and the others. Durable statues that can stand up to abuse. Because such men should never be forgotten.
As a conservative i thought it was a brillant move of Political B.S. on both sides part.
Cheney – the president is the Sol party that is the Exeutive branch.
Demacrats – Oh? Ok! Mo more money!
Cheney.. well fudge me.
:P
He’s going to shoot each and every one of them in the face…
….
He tried to do WHAT?!
(lol)
Haha.
Cheney: VP Office is not part of the Exc branch!
Congress: ORLY?
Cheney: YARLY!
Congress: NOMONIES!
Cheney: ONOZ!
Yeah, I heard about this a while ago and it still astounds me. I’m just waiting for the next Cheney shitstorm when we find out why he didn’t want his papers released in the first place.
What makes you think we’ll ever find out? I swear I can hear the shredders going from here…
Are you kidding me, Course the shreaders are going full tilt in D.C. Cheneys office, Bushs office, Hilerys office, Edwards office ect. the Bigest crooks in the USA are the ones in DC not in the oil companys( tho they are a close second.)
That’s not a bias…that’s common sense. Cheney is being an idiot.
Considering I’m a libertarian, and I don’t agree with how the president or VP have handled themselves while in office, it pains me to say this: Cheney is right. The VP is NOT really part of the Executive Branch. The EB is the President. The VP is part of the Cabinet. Which is the Legislature. For other other proof of it, here’s what the Plum Book says about it.
http://www.gpoaccess.gov/plumbook/2004/p226_appendix5.pdf
The Plum Book is the book put out by the Senate to help keep track of people in government and what their jobs are.
Yeah, hurts me too.
that still doesn’t obscure the fact that the VP’s office get’s funding as though it were part of the executive branch, or the fact that he turned around and reversed his position as soon as he was threatened with lose of funding. Either way, he’s a weasel.
DAMN there goes my underground Drug and pornography ring theorys.
Still technically wasn’t he embezzling from the government? I’m not sure about proper vocabulary on something like this cause…….well when has this ever happened?
name some one in an elected national office who isnt stealing from the people? if you doubt, recall the HoR just voted on giving them selves a raise this past week
You’re right, But I wasn’t saying that he wasn’t doing bad things. I was saying that his statement that he’s not part of the Executive branch is correct.
And for all these people out there to rage and curse about how stupid his statement was, just shows me how stupid (and ignorant) *they* are. If you are going to make these statements, do your research first.
Oh, and GonnaBuyAMac, yes, if you make a statement without having the facts to back up said statement, it’s a bias. Statements made from a bias is by it’s very nature ignorant.
Woulden’t stating your opinion be a statement made from a bias?
So by your logic, anyone stating thier opinions are ignorant?
Woulden’t just stating that statements made from a bias are ignorant, just becuase it is your opinion, be a bias statement, and thus, again by your own statement, be ignorant?
Heh, that’s a pretty big statement there. yes there are some opinions that are formed purely on the basis of a bias. And yes, they are ignorant.
And no, when I say that, it is not my opinion, it is fact. Why? Because of the definition of the word ignorant. “Uninformed”. If you’re making a statement without having checked your facts, it means you are uninformed, ie. Ignorant.
Speaking of ignorant, you need to understand, it is not a bad thing. Stupidity is a bad thing. Ignorance can be corrected, stupidity cannot.
Btw, the word “opinion” means different things depending on what you apply it to. If you applied it to music, it’d mean “your tastes”. If applied to a news story, it means “an informed conclusion”. Using such a word in logical argument was highly illogical. :P
So that means that Congress can freely subpoena Cheney, compel him to testify under oath and on the record, and can arrest him for Contempt of Congress if he refuses? I’d like to see them try, because we know full well what would happen – They’d assert Executive Privilege, just like they did with the firing of the U.S. Attorneys (which was the Department of Justice, ALSO part of the Cabinet).
Put simply, the Executive is more than just the Office of the President. The day we play by that statement (and the Plum Book is not law) is the day it matters.
I heard about Cheney trying to hide something on the radio one day and I was thinking “What?! WHAT?!” over and over again in my mind.
After a short while, I remember hearing something about how a CIA agent Cheney had ordered to go to Iraq and find a reason that he could use against the press as to why we were in there in the first place came back with nothing.
And after that I remembered that Cheney is one of the top members in a company that’s currently monopolizing construction in bases in Iraq.
And then it all clicked.
Maybe they’re all bills from his bank account indicating how much he’s gaining from the war?
Lucky he caught a little crusader that was more than happy to go with his wishes.
Another theory is illegal CIA activity like torture-interrogation and other things of the sort. Or maybe some sort of assasination plot on some other president ..
The CIA HAS been notorious for doing these types of things, including the planned and failed assassination of Fidel Castro.
Imagination goes wild as to what these documents might be.
Also, wouldn’t he be charged of something if he shredded the papers?
Go Ron Paul! he’ll clean that crap up!
