It is of little surprise to many of you that I have no love for the O’Reilly Factor on FOX. I’m just not a fan.

Regardless of your political views, I don’t think it’s tough to admit that Bill O’Reilly has an incredibly abrasive personality. He’s constantly cutting mics and calling people pinheads. So I have to admit, I was amused and a little impressed to see this clip, in which Boulder High School student Jesse Lange calmly and intelligently delivers his rebuttal to Bill O’Reilly. The kid even comes with documents that he cites during the course of the “debate”. His conduct is more impressive than many adult guests on the show.

This link goes out to an article from an obviously liberal site - just ignore it and scroll down to the video, if you don’t care for the bias (although it’s worth skimming for some background facts).

Check out the movie, “Al Franken: God Spoke”, where the liberal point of view looks entirely normal in comparison to O’Reilly.

That’s still rediculous to say “this extreme example makes O’Reilly look okay!” which is entirely unrealistic.

I cant stand the man, he is an absolute waste, and his tv show is a complete joke! Its hard for me to imagine that people actually watch that show to hear news, but instead i think most people simply watch it to see how big a dick hes going to be, its sad that its considered a news show.

Wow. Hot damn, O’Reilly got his ass handed to him by a high school kid. I’m amazed sometimes people like him can sit there and deny that which is put in front of them. I guess O’Reilly just didn’t want to admit he’d bitten off a little more than he could chew. You should know better than to misquote stuff at highschool students. Proper citation is just about the ONLY thing I learned in high school.

As a Watcher of O’Rilly myself I cant understand why people dont like him.
He has his Opinion and he delebertly gets people that are as unwavering as himself on the program for the Purpose of Butting heads with them.
It remindes me of watching the Discovery channel with the 2 Rams headbutting each other.
And the only time he calls anything on his show a Debate is when he gets 2 Pigheaded people on the show on and lets them duke it out, with himself jumping in to attack one or both sides.
What scares me more than Bill O’Rilly ans the like is that 50+% of people claim to get their news from places like the Daily Show/E! that scares the fudge outa me.

I don’t like O’Reilly because he pretends his show is factual.
AS for the Daily Show or E!…E! is an entertainment network, no one gets anything but celebrity news from them. John stewart said that people AREN’T getting their news from him because his jokes require people to already know the current events.

Ekibiogami, the problem is the man clearly distorts facts and makes up quotes to support his point of view.

That’s called lying, and it’s especially bad if you claim to be a newsperson.

The Daily Show at least shows the facts. Bill fails to even do that.

John isn’t on a news channel, he’s on a comedy channel! John TELLS people his show is fake. O’Reilly is on FOX “NEWS” where he expects people to think he’s telling the truth. He claims to be telling the truth. Stephen Colbert said that he doesn’t want his daughter to watch his show because he has to say things he doesn’t actually mean, and he doesn’t want her to see that. O’Rielly claims to be sincere.

I am trying to become more politaclly alert nowadays and figured this would be a good time to ask. I am more liberal then conservative, but I try to stay moderate when it comes to reading/watching anything. Most sites and televison tend to swing left or right and end up just pissing me off claiming they are “balanced” or whatever. Anybody have any suggestions for where to find my much wanted facts without any lean-to?

Comment by Ananth
2007-06-24 11:24:20

Hah, don’t expect to find that anywhere. The media these days is biased, whether it’s liberal or conservative, and it’s because we’re living in such politically-polarising times. My suggestion is to get news from wherever you like it (I tend to check the BBC, NYTimes, and CNN) and then decide for yourself.

Ananth is right, there is no really balanced news. The best you can do is look at several sources with different biases, and compare them to try to eliminate the spin. I’m increasingly dubious about the credibility of the NY Times, but BBC usually reports accurate and complete (if biased) news. CNN has a fairly low bias, although as with almost any news source, you need to take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, and I think most things on TV, including news, are increasingly badly done. I read the Washington Times as my primary news source and look stuff up on the internet to supplement it. You usually get a more complete and accurate story in the papers or on the internet. TV news is rather sensationalized.

I’m quite surprised that this sparked controversy.
In england we’re taught about drugs, sex and STDs from as early as 12 and the older we get, the material we receive gets more intimate so we get used to such ideas.

I’ve never seen the O’Reilly Factor and just from that clip, i’m surprised that he’s still on the air.

I cant say how its done now, but during my middle school days (I’m a 8th semester undergrad, so not THAT far off), kids had to take home a permission slip for parents to sign for their children to attend Sex Ed classes. Being in the conservative/poor region I was in, a lot of adults opted their children out. Even then, the boys and girls were split up, and all the girls got was a video about periods and so forth. It never, even until the end of my public high school career, got more technical or intimate than that.

Now a days, more schools are foregoing the permission slips. Too many children are leaving the school system with the completely wrong idea about sex.

O’Reilly actually broke Canadian law in that clip. Assuming that everything is taken verbatim from that video, O’Reilly slandered someone’s image and name, and could be taken to court for libel. I’m not sure if US law has something similar, but it might be something to look into.

I think if I had been Jesse, I would have actually accused him of that, regardless of if US actually has a law regarding slander and libel. The idea of seeing O’Reilly squirm because he’s been threatened with a potential lawsuit is just hilarious.

There’s actually a petition of grievances against Bill O’Reilly circulating the Boulder area which happens to mention “slanderous statements made on air” by him. I would assume that if they don’t get the apology they demand, they will actually sue. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but not too unreasonable.

Wow.

I have never seen the O’Reilly Factor, but what I find the most ridiculus is actually the reaction from that conference/panel thing. Every semester in my highschool, there is a week where among other things, we discuss drug use, gay rights, molestation (rape and domestic), self defence and such. And there has been no objection or protests regarding it. And we hear from former addicts about drug use and alcoholism. And we get gay people doing Q&A. Last semester we had one famous actor, who also ran a children’s show for two years after coming out of the closet.

Is this a culture difference or something? I mean, why even pay attention to the fuzz around this?

As I said in the forums, I prefer to take my news from a wide variety of sources, simply because that allows me to see as much of the bigger and smaller pictures as possible, thereby allowing me to decide how I’m going to use that information to the best of my ability. I agree with you Ananth that there are a lot of really biased media organisations around today, though I also believe that there are still some around that take pride in doing their best at being impartial or as close to it as possible considering the political and legal environments present. SBS World News Australia and the Newsdesk section of the College Radio Station that I work at being among them.

Another thing is that the media funds its business activities by attracting the largest audience that they can thats possible. In the case of Fox News, in a lot of the markets that it broadcasts to, theres a lot of conservative individuals present. As a result, Fox is always going to try to attract as many of them as possible in order to maintain their businnes interests. Ditto with Sky News in Britain, however their audience is based towards moderate audiences, since thats what the majority of the Brits are.

Like it or not, the majority of the majority of the media is profit driven. In other words, remove the need for advertising revenue, and you would see a lot more honesty in the news.

as for the issue honestly i think i’d like to be the guy my son learns from when it comes to issues about drugs or sex.. why can’t schools realize its the parents job to raise the kids.. and the schools job to teach them academics.. its the few lazy parents that really just mess it up for all of us i guess..
