I’m thinking of checking out the Bodies exhibition at one point. According to the website, the exhibition uses real bodies to show what a body looks like from the inside.
Yeah I know, that sounds gross, but at the same time interesting. Hey, if you want to learn about the human anatomy, you can go there to learn.

Make sure you know which one they’re showing… I went to see it and it was only the educational one not the artistic one… there are different versions of the body exhibit.
Isnt that the one they had in casino royale? i heard its actualy pretty interesting
Yup, that’s the one. The cadavers were “donated” in the name of science. Someone willed their body to be used, etc.
I went to see that in Atlanta when i was there, its pretty damn cool
Yeah I saw lots of articles when the exhibiton tour started a few years ago. I’m def going to have to make a trip down to Va to see this, since its so close.
I went to see it, when it was in Chicago. That thing was pretty awesome.
You should really go. I got to see it in Europe and it was amazing. Regardless of which show it is I assure you it will be amazing.
You should really go see BodyWorlds instead. (www.bodyworlds.com) It’s the guy who invented the process and he’s been doing it for over 20 years. Much better show and the bodies are in better condition.
I second Kyle’s comment. The BodyWorlds exhibits are far superior. Of course that doesn’t help you much if BodyWorlds never comes to your city. Its good anatomy drawing practice too, not that you need the practice.
I saw it in Houston and it was awesome. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that many of the male cadavers were missing one or both testicles. I wonder how many women made off with special “memories” of the exhibit?
how bout this? balls are white, brain is reddish color, and everything is gross looking.
…but thats for you to decide.
Dude, so go to the expo. I live in NYC and went to the one there. I don’t understand anything concerning medical stuff, but It was awesome!
They have an exhibit like that showing right now where I live. It is pretty much AMAZING! They have a HUGE horse and a person riding it on display.. seriously, you have to go check it out.
My favorite was the “exploded” guy riding the giant penny farthing. And the peeled rabbits were cool too.
Oh hey! I saw that exhibit in Minnesota! It was very cool! I highly recommend seeing it, even if it is the educational version.
Oh, it was in Seattle, and I really wanted to go see it and never did. You should go! It sounded awesome.
I saw one of the artistic ones in San Fran a while ago. Very educational, and the plastinisation process they use almost revolutionized the way some A&P classes do work now. I reccomend paying close attention to the organs they injected with silicone-rubber, then disolved, giving a near perfect view of inner workings and capilaries.
Everyone in my family except me went to see BodyWorlds at the Science Center in Toronto.
I was way to freaked out by the whole idea.
They told me it was very neat, but slightly disturbing and even my dad found it weird (he’s a doctor).
I’m going on thursday to the one in NYC. I’ve been waiting for so long for a chance and finally my anatomy and bio classes are taking the trip. I cant wait!
I was lucky enough to have an invite to see the exhibit in Boston on its area debut. Quite possibly the most stunning presentation of an alternative art I have ever seen. if you have the opportunity you would be seriously remiss to not take the time to see it for yourself.
My favorite? Has to be the vascular man, a gentleman with all the blood vessels extracted and frozen in his form, which give a breathtakingly intricate ’shade’ of the individual.
Are there two different exhibtions. I saw one almost ten years ago in Cologne, Germany. Back in the days there was a media frenzy (well a controversy) about the show. But the exhibtor was Gunther van Hagens ( http://www.bodyworlds.com ). Your show seems to have another exhibitor so I can’t guarantee that it will be as impressive as the visit I had.
I was 16/17 and it really opened my mind for my body and the human anatomy.
They even had a small shielded area with a warning. Which was due as they showed some dead babies and fetuses. I had tears in my eyes.
If you have the chance, then go see it. I think it helps to appreciate who and what you are.
I saw BodyWorlds II in Denver– I thought I’d be squeamish and completely squicked by it, but it was absolutely fascinating. It was divided into a more educational portion, with separate organs, comparisons of healthy tissue versus diseased, explorations of the different systems of the body; and then you progressed further into the exhibit for the more ‘artistic’ displays of the human figure– which were still educational and fascinating.
I got to hold a lung– I’ve dealt with a couple different problems with my lungs all my life, from asthma to a more serious lung disease, and in all my years of tests and treatment, this was the first time I got to see, up close, an actual lung (not a model) and see how incredibly feather-light it was.
I would also recommend trying to find a BodyWorlds exhibit over this ‘Bodies’ exhibit.
Saw that when it was in Atlanta a while back. Was pretty cool and a damned whole lotta interesting.
First time posting, weeee, but now i feel the urge to say something too for once:
GO THERE!
I remember the first time a museum over here in germany did something like that. All the bad press it had. And how church and the government even spoke against it cos for them it was more related to Art than Science.
It didnt stop our teacher back then to drag us there and i had the pleasure to see most of our class go pale and leave the room while i stood there in awe and needed the entire day in the museum. You´ll need a strong gut for it, especially if they show the wounded and disabled babies. Or the many kinds of cancer, but you will learn a lot, i can tell you. It´s an experience you shouldnt miss
I actually saw that when it was here in Denver. It’s kinda awesome. Although some parts of it are kinda creepy.
It was here in Miami not too long ago. It was really cool, especially the room that was all dark that had the circulatory system glowing. That was awesome
First post too, yay !!
BodyWorld is showing right now here in Montreal … honestly, can’t wait to see it. I think it’s a must see, no better way to learn how we are inside.
We talked about this in my art history class. I’d love to go if it was anywhere near me. :/
I actually went to Body Worlds in KOREA.
yeah… they actually made a stop there. One thing I learned there. Your total arm-span is equal to your height.
I saw it at MoMA in New York. It’s gross but endlessy intresting.
It’s cool, and very interesting. The bodies used are mainly chinese, and there are stories going around these could belong to executed political prisoners. But it’s still very educational.
If you go, enjoy it. ;3
I’ve gone to it and it’s really cool. Although the bodies almost look to clean and perfect to of died…I dunno though because my mom tricked me into going there with my eyes closed and she opened them up and I almost died of a heart attack
You should defnitely go see it, even if it isn’t the ‘artistic’ version for each of those preserved bodies in my opinion are works of art. I can’t imagine how much time went into preserving each one, and the doctors who performed them… had to be world class dissection experts.
It came to Cleveland at the Science Center and even though I had my reservations about going to see actual dead bodies, I left with a better understanding of what really is behind your belly-button.
You should go, just don’t go on the last day because people are lazy and it will be a mad-house as poeple try to get in before it moves on to the next city.
My girlfriend and I live next door to it. Seriously, its accross the street. Kinda creepy knowing theres bodies in the next building over.
No, the Bodies thing is really, really cool. And, I mean, the bodies are neatly preserved and whatnot; there’s not awful formaldehyde smell or anything. Not gross at all.
(Though, I’m a premed student and I’ve seen the insides of several *live* people…)
The Bodies (or BodyWorlds, whatever it’s called) is totally cool and even though I was too squeamish to go to med school the exhibit didn’t gross me out at all! :)
You should absolutely go see it!
It is wonderful and amazing.
I wish I could go see it again!
Definitely something to see. Caught the BodyWorld’s exhibit in Worchester a few months ago and it was amazing. In addition to all the bodies and organs, there was a camel. A freaking full grown camel.
Caught it in Chicago, it was amazing. Gives you a real appreciation of what you take for granted on a day-to-day basis.
The most memorable piece to me was one where a guy is riding a horse and holding both his own brain and the horse’s in his hands.
Ah, I saw that while it was in Houston. It was very interesting… but I wound up feeling bad afterwards. My system just couldn’t take it, no matter how cool I thought it was. XD
I went to it when it was in Minneapolis - it’s worth it. You learn a ton about the human body.
Lots of really cool stuff, and some mildly disturbing stuff, too… if they have the fetus/birth defect room, well, the name should tell you what to expect.
there is a 4 part tv Documentary Series by Gunther von Hagens called Anatomy for Beginners ,I highly recommend it if you find the bodies the exhibition interesting. side not not for the squemish though
They were in Miami and I went to see it. It’s pretty awesome ^_^
Totally recommend it
:)
Hey Hawk, go see it! I saw it in Cleveland a while back and it’s the most amazing thing…
I’m actually going to see that at the science museum I volunteer at. It’s suppose to be coming in at the end of the month.
From what I’ve heard, it has an illongated man. female archer, a gorilla, skateboarder. Just about everything you can think of. Including a rider and his horse.
It’s totally worth seeing.
you really should, i went and saw it when it was in MN and its really cool. but stay away from the baby room…
I work at the one in NYC. And seeing all those bodies every day has *definately* improved my anatomy drawing, even if I’m not allowed to sketch ‘em while I work.
My favorite room is the circulatory gallery. The blood vessels are I think the most visually stunning thing there. Intricate and delicate and just- beautiful.
My least favorite is the prenatal room. They can use all the nice sounding words that they want, it’s still a room full of dead babies. Go look if you are curious, but don’t stay too long, it hurts the soul after a while. But I may just feel that way because I frequently have to walk through there for several hours at a time and that gets rough.
I went to the showing in pheonix of it. I am not one for looking at bodies and stuff but i found it really interesting a beautiful at the same time. It’s well worth a visit no matter if it’s the educational or the artistic version of the show.
I saw BodyWorlds in Chicago, and it was absolutely fantastic. One thing we were told is that some of the bodies were indeed of prisoners, and all had given their consent to be put on display like this after they had died (of course. Otherwise I’m guessing there would be massive trouble, hee). One that fascinated me in particular was of a man who had been sliced evenly from head to toe in sections about one inch thick.
I saw it when I was visiting Seattle, didn’t have the stomach to go inside. Something about seeing people without skin on feels just like a nudist beach: you don’t fit in wearing what they’re not and you’re constantly afraid of one of them recognizing you later.
hm.. so that guys over the pond? I saw the exhibition when it was in Berlin years ago. Left a mark on my oh so innoccend childhood oÔ
no seriously, that is just weird. not gross or something, just weird.
I went and saw it last year. It’s pretty good, you should go.
I wish I had gone to see it while it was in seattle. Sad that somebody had to ruin the hands on part by stealing the kidney.
I saw it in Miami, twice. Yea, it was that awesome.
I went and personal I loved it…but I am not the type that is freaked out by such things.
This one lady fainted (I am not sure if she was just really hot or really grossed out)
I just barely managed to see it before it left Seattle. Apparently someone stole a kidney a while back.
We went there for a class field trip when we went through a human anatomy unit. They don’t let you take any photos, so that was a turn-off. It’s also better to have some time when you go. My favorite part was the circulatory system exhibit, which may have been because of the lighting. The fetal development part was educational as well.
The way they preserve the specimens is by using some polymer to replace the water inside cells, then dissolving the rest of the body. The specimens all died of natural causes, and with nobody to claim them, they were given to science by the Chinese government (the specimens are all Asian).
It’s worth going to see if you can.
I went to see bodies when it was here in Tampa. Take a sketchbook, a camera (I think they allow cameras) and make sure you eat well before you go. I got to spend about 2 hours there, I easily could have spent the entire day. The fetus room is freaking cool. Make sure you see it!
Just uh… don’t eat near them, or before or too soon after.
It throws off your appetite.
Take pictures … and while your at it … take pictures of your new betta fishy! thanks
I haven’t seen the exhibition, but I saw somrthing that seems pretty cclose to what you say in a morphology department of a university
it’s pretty cool
They don’t allow pictures at the one I work at. No cameras or cell phones. My entire job consists of telling people to turn them off or put them away. Make my life easier and don’t try it.
Sketchbooks are encouraged though. Just don’t sit on the floor- it’s crowded and people will trip on you.
wasn’t there a little commotion about the bodies? as in them being corpses of homeless Chinese people or labor camp prisoners??
