Jaycee from our forums has posted a thread about the RIAA raising royalty-rates on webcasts + internet radio. It’s a big deal. This is pertinent to a lot of you, as internet radio gets many of us through our workdays, but even if it isn’t, please take a look.

Nothing is sacred.
that seems quite stupid…to cut off internet radio would be the same as cutting out radio, or at least it is to me, i use interent radio at work only becuase no one in my area put opera on the waves so i have resort to buying it or internet radio… this is un-cool
Awe drat! Does anyone think that this may include any radio podcasts? That would A) Blow ass and B) Nick any of my plans for awesome.
Shameless. Completely and utterly shameless. Personally, I don’t listen to internet radio, but I do acknowledge its significance in many peoples life. And to throw such a wonderful portal to new music that people may not know of to make what is essentially an easy buck?
I really do hope the idiot who came up with this plan gets hit by a bus. And then defecated on by some homeless person with a bowel condition afterwards.
My techno…
I don’t think their is really much they can do about it honestly. Unless they decide to go around shutting down millions of sites for supplying something that’s already free.
just to clarify, this isn’t a charge to listen on the listeners, this is a tax applied to the company to play the music. tax isn’t something you can get around without moving your company abroad, and for most of the companys this will effect that’s just not an option.
essentially this will kill online radio based in the US.
Oh goody, so now I can stream from Australia rather than Cleveland, whoopee. - hugs T1 line -
I think it is time for riaa to be shut down to see how they like it
That really sucks, even though i have no clue how to find a good station, i barely have any good local ones. There are 2 music stations i listen to. But they both suck pretty much…
If anyone knows a good techno (like prodigy) or nerdcore (mcChris, Frontalot) station please email me! (while i can still listen)

Well, blargh.
I’d heard about this from the good folks at Pandora. It’s a pity, as none of the local stations carry anything I listen to on a regular basis. I wish I could be of more assistance, but I’ll do what I can. (I doubt Terry would support any changes to said bill, but I’ve been wrong before.)
I have signed the petition.
I don’t listen to internet radio, but I know stupid when I see it and this is big time stupid. They’re only going to end up costing themselves profits in the long run because there won’t be anyone willing to pay their prices. It’s like upping the cost of a bottle of Coke from $1 to $5. Sure, you might still sell a couple to people who’re desperate enough, but selling twenty bottles for $1 beats selling two for $5. What kind of idiots run the RIAA?
I signed the petition but I think it will be a useless gesture. I’m fairly certain that, if the RIAA weren’t as cut off from the public as it is, the petition wouldn’t be necessary in the first place. (I only occasionally listen to GamingFM and I have a Yahoo Music Station that I rarely listen to so I’m not really representative of the people who would be hit by this.)
someone posted the Idea that this would be an ex post facto law(after the fact) and that such laws are unconstitutional, this idea intrigues me, if it’s true it’s a nice thing for anyone wanting to listen, however, I’m not sure how well the RIAA’s lawyers could play it off as not being such. the retroactive paygrade thing does make sense though.
The RIAA, while a good concept in, perhaps, wolfman jacks era.. are useless now in the information age. The concept that you cannot stop the signal, is very true.. and they won’t acknowledge it. I think people hate the RIAA more then they ever loathed the IRS.
What the RIAA is absolutely unacceptable. I really doubt they’ll actually be able to go through with this (You can’t control the INTERNETS!!1!), but it’s just another step towards their eventual deconstruction. They are outdated and unneeeded, and, like any other desperate creature, they will persistently fight against their inevitable doom until the day they die.
