I guess this is my week for self-righteous indignation?

It’s a short article, so here it is in it’s entirety:

There is a fear that Harrison Ford will walk and not make a fourth Indiana Jones movie as he has been told that he cannot use a real whip, Indiana Jones is most famous for the use of his whip to help him get out of situation but he has been told by the studio that is against new health and safety laws to allow him to use a real one so instead a computer generated has to be added in later

Ford has said that this rule is ridiculous and that he will pull out of the new movie unless he gets his whip back.

I get the feeling that this is a fake, though? It seems patently absurd …

Indiana Jones without a whip is like Batman without his utility belt, it just doesn’t happen.

I was going to say something close… “Indiana Jones without a whip is like James Bond without a martini and whore…”

Not entirely sure how well one would be able to pretend to whip things without it looking like casting a fishing pole 0.o

I wouldn’t surprise me in this crazy world we live in these days. But seriously i agree with DPK on this one; how old is ford anyways?

He’s old enough that his real “whip” needs Viagra. Or was that Sean Connery? :P

As much as i twitch at the thought of a whipless ‘Jones, at least its Ford playing him.

Well…he wouldn’t be without his whip. It would just be CG’ed in. I completely believe this is possible in Kahleefourneeah. I also wouldn’t blame him for walking. That would really f**k with his process to have to mime a whip. So lame.

if it is true, i’m with the man Ford on this – seems patently stupid to have to computer generate a whip – i mean, how many people did he kill or maim in the last 3 films when they filmed him using it?

I doubt this is real. Studios HATE paying for CGI, as it ain’t cheap. Can you imagine how expensive it would be to pay for putting a whip in every freaking scene with Indiana Jones?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ford has to use some kind of “movie whip” (a prop more than an actual functioning whip), but to just CGI it the whole way through sounds ridiculous.

But i have bin getting a lot of cyber lie messages lately so i wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t true.

I like that he’s standing up for his rights to use a real prop on his own movie. I think that the movie industry has really started to wuss out – I mean, Sharon Stone got to use a whip as Catwoman. I think even Halle Berry got to use one, too (as a more recent example).

Plus, as expensive as CGI is, the studio also has to insure Harrison Ford during the movie, and his rate for a movie where he might injure himself with a real whip might just outweigh the cost of CGI effects. Who knows with Hollywood?!

Dude, when was Sharon Stone ever Catwoman? Michelle Pfeiffer, yes.

Wussed out? I’d say whipped. And give the man his whip, it’s not like it’s a loaded machine gun!

I think this has far more to do with his age/health than the fact that it was a whip he was using. If not his health, than the health of those around him when he breaks an osteo parosoid limb and whips spielberg in the face.

This sounds very real when considering the comments made by Jackie Chan about filming in the US. He’s had trouble getting to do his own stunts and stuff and always tied up in security lines and with security measures that completely ridicule him and cramp his style.

I truly hope that Ford walks away from this one if he doesn’t get to do it the real way.

Maybe the Indians would like to take on the challenge ? Go go Barrison Bord of Bollywood ! :)

Harrison Ford is a veteran actor, from a sadly bygone age of movie making. Where actors occasionally put themselves in reasonable degrees of danger in order to get a take just right. Where it wasn’t unheard of for an actor to learn to be pulled by a pair of horses, climb a rope so that they could get themselves onto the horse’s backs, then bring the horses to a halt. Without a stuntman. And the actors ENJOYED this sort of insanity. There were no carefully planned shots to hide the stuntman’s face, there was no CGI to replace the face in a mis shot. You cracked the whip, you waited for the fake whip to be secured, and for closeup shots, you swung across the ravine yourself. For wide pan shots, a stunt double was used, yeah, but still.

Equally important is that he’s been trained on how to do this sort of stuff. He has three movies of training on how to use that whip. Actors don’t just forget things like that. They sit in their trailers and grin about it, their hands flexing as they remember the fun they had on the set or just learning this skill, and look for any excuse to use it again.

What I’m saying is, yes, the whip is part of the iconic image of Indy, but it’s also something that Ford, especially at his age, truly wants to use. I say, more power to him!

well, it’s doubtful Ford would walk out just because he doesn’t get a real whip. unless Indy gets new slow-mo and crazy attack skillz with his whip this time around, CG is pointless.

either way it goes, it doesn’t sound like they are getting rid of the whip. and seriously, someone give me a link to a health regulation involving whips, people have guns on most sets.

As sad as it may seem, I’m having trouble taking the article seriously. Why? Because it’s comprised mainly of a single run-on sentence. Hell, even a semi-colon would have been welcome.

And as Ananth said, it does seem quite absurd.

I kinda have my doubts about this movie to begin with. Last Crusade was awesome, and should’ve been the high note that ended the trilogy. Instead they’re going to push out one more.

One more can’t hurt, right? That’s what they said about Star Wars. Look what happened there.

At any rate, I’m starting an Indiana Jones Dead Pool that says Ford croaks before the movie is finished filming.

I’m pretty sure its a hoax. I’m sure it would have made its way onto bigger news sites if it were true, complete with some quotes from Ford. Besides the article is riddled with grammatical errors which I find pretty suspect for such a short article. It also lacks a byline and, as already mentioned, is one long run-on sentence! =P

Also the movie will likely be filmed, at least partially, in other countries. Finally if you do a search on laws against bullwhips, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything. As I understand it, they are still used to herd cattle.

The movie might still feature a CGI whip but it won’t be for the reasons stated above, and I expect it would still feature Ford. Just my thoughts though. I could be completely off the ball here but I doubt it.
