There seems to be a lot of buzz about Children of Men. Reviews from people either seem to point at the movie being really good, or boring and underdeveloped. After watching the trailer, though, I admit I really do want to see it. It’s an interesting concept, at the least.

Have any of you seen it? What did you think? No spoilers please, though … thanks!

I didn’t like the movie. The general idea had a lot of promise, but the strong political overtones ruined the movie for me.

It’s good! It as been a while since a movie suprised me more then once. I can usually tell what will happen next but with this one, nothing. I just didn`t see any of it coming. Fun ride with some lighter and heavier moments. Not movie of the year (For me) but comes close. I’m sure you would enjoy it!

I’ve only seen previews about this movie. I think it’s about some global catastrophe that left the civilized world in shambles and only the strong survive. This is what it looked like to me, so I may be wrong. But I can tell you I definitely want to see it sometime soon. I think it will be really good.

The movie was excellent, not because of the story itself, but because of how it was told. There are several really long (including one 10 minute+) action scenes that appear to have been shot in one take (although of course there is always CGI work added afterward). The long action shots make the movie appear fluid and “real” and are reminiscent of the game Half-Life 2, immersing you in the action as the characters move through large sets, into buildings, etc. This is a welcome change from the rapid-fire MTV style cutting that most films do. It’s very gritty and real. At one point fake blood was accidentally sprayed on the camera lens during an action sequence and it was left in the film. You really feel like you are there in the middle of it all with blood in your eyes.

The movie also tells a lot of the story in the background, without dialogue. There are no points where one character suddenly spouts off 5 minutes of dialogue to explain the backstory. Instead, there are props, photos, clippings. Things happening in the background. You get the whole picture without being told everything.

The first two minutes of the movie are so immersive it left me speechless (which was a good thing because I was in a theater and talking is verboten). You know everything about the world you need to know without the main character speaking a word.

I will see it again. Great cinematography and direction. Writing (5 screenwriters!) not so much, but the direction overcomes the plot weaknesses.

Yeah totally agree. Especially about the HL2 thing, thats about the first thing I said to my mate when we got out our seats.

The long action shots are great and there are some really powerful moments as well as some truly hilarious ones.

Though there was a lot of political overtones, and was very orwellian, they put more in it about just humanity in general than I thought there would be. There was a lot of big brother, and don’t trust the government , but there was still a lot about how flawed people can be over just an idea. I came to the movie thinking that it would just be the good guys vrs the bad guys, and it was just more complicated than that, and it was very nice.

A lot of people really like it because of the politics in it, and the cinimetography. I’ll admit, both were really good. But as an actual movie instead of a political statement/new work of art, I’d say it really isn’t as good. There is no question about what is going to happen, it’s ridiculously predictable, and it sort of leaves you saying “Well…okay…now what?”. I equate it to Doom 3; Oh, look, it’s pretty and shiny and new and futuristic! But wait, the actual gameplay kind of sucks…

All in all, movie buffs will probably like it much more than the average moviegoer, who won’t be so keen to pick up on political statements and see the beauty in the filmmaking. If you really want to see it, go ahead, it’s entertaining enough. Just don’t expect too much at the finish line.

No super political propaganda. Honest. It’s close enough to reality to be scary, but there’s no ‘this is X’s fault, defy them!’ rubbish.

The action scenes are treated rather realistically, and they’re few and far between. The suspense can get you biting your nails at times, but it’s more subtle than your average action film.

Best movie of the year, if it doesnt win any awards, then people will know for sure that those award shows are fixed…

Anyway I like the dark themes broken up with some off color humor, how human the charaters are and the documentary style camera angels.

I saw it when it was out here earlier this year. I thought it was fantastic. I’m seeing people complaining about the politics involved in it, but it wasn’t anywhere near the Big Brother stuff from V… if anything, it’s fairly accurate to the level of overwatch we have here in the UK already.

It’s a different sort of postapocalyptic world because the apocalypse isn’t from war or the weather or any of the usual current-issue tie-ins you tend to find in Hollywood. It really benefits from being understated and taking its inspiration from a book which was published in the mid-90s (we’re all fairly certain the author ripped the idea off from an older sci-fi novel which uses the same concept). It’s not so heavy that it’s overwhelming, either (A Scanner Darkly was a serious mindf*** in comparison).

If you want cheap thrills, go watch something else. If you want to see a good piece of filmmaking, go see Children of Men.

I was actually quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this film as I usually prefer lighter or less political films but this one really got to me I guess. I got into this movie so much more than the average film. I’m usually picking apart the acting or the dialogue when I go to the movies, but this one hit me full in the face and I couldn’t look away. The action sequences are stunning in their realism, though not jarringly cut as in Black Hawk Down. It’s always shot from a single point of view which gives one the feel of truly being in the middle of a pitch gun battle. There were long periods in the film when I had to force myself to start breathing again. I thought they struck a very good balance between shaky handheld documentary footage and steady-cam film.

As for the political overtones, I’d say that it depends on your personal politics. There are some seriously not-so-subtle condemnations of current US public and foreign policy. I agreed with most of the editorial stuff, so it made the experience much more powerful.

Overall, a very very good film. I had to go home and have a whiskey on the rocks just to come down from it. If you sit there and pick at it, you’ll find things to gripe about. If you let it wash over you, you’ll come away feeling drained and battered, both physically and emotionally. It’s on my list of best movies ever. Given how anal I am about film, that’s no small feat.

I’m going to get a lot of crap for this, as I already have, but the movie was atrocious. In my opinion, it was terrible. I understand that it was trying to make a political point, as well as emphasize the fact that we’re far too engrossed with violence in our culture. But it’s all lost. If they wanted to make those points, they could have watched Bonnie and Clyde, which makes the point much more powerfully, and was a movie that really made an impact. Another good example of ways to show violence with a point, is even The Sopranos, in which the violence IS their culture, and is used tastefully. But in Children of Men, I felt it was violence for the sake of saying they had violence in it.

The politics, unlike other critiques, isn’t what bothered me. I’m not spoiling anything by saying this, but when you see someone getting shot in the head numerous times, point blank, it really just stops making an impact. I went in, expecting a marvelous movie, and wanted to be blown away, but really, I was just annoyed with how it tried to come across. What makes me even more annoyed is how people are calling it the Blade Runner for the 21st century. Blade Runner was a good movie… no, it was an amazing movie, with a plot, and with a point that you could hold onto. CoM simply grasps desperately for a plot, and turns up empty handed, trying to use something, and never resolving the plot to begin with. I felt no emotion for the characters either, because going in, you know after the first ten minutes, most of the cast, if not all, is probably going to die. And when they do, all you can do is shrug and say “Well, I told you so”. You lose sympathy for any kind of death after the first half hour, and simply get annoyed after the last hour and a half of more mindless killing.

I felt a better way to have made their point would have been with art (as they did for a small portion of the movie, and seemed to just give up on) rather than senseless killing. It’s hard to explain without telling you most of the movie, but easy to see if you do watch it. I recommend seeing it, if for nothing more than to compare reviews at this point. Don’t go in expecting anything… you’ll find yourself either let down, or blinded by what others say. I know I’m fairly alone in saying the movie was bad… but I just feel like the people who think it’s powerful and groundbreaking didn’t really understand what was going on either. I thought the cinematography was well done, and the way in which some of the mood was set was good, but it simply got old, it felt like. I’ve seen the same political and social gripes in many other movies, and the director has done some other astounding films (I believe he did Tu Mama Tambien), but this just fell very short of the mark, for me.

I went to see it the day it came out (I think) with some friends – there wasn’t really much on, so we chose this. I’m so glad we did!

It’s not your typical high-octane action-packed drama, that’s for sure! But as others have said, if you immerse yourself in it, it really does leave you in a state of shock. And with so much content, worryingly close to how things are in the UK atm, it really does leave you thinking & talking to friends about it for days afterwards.

Make your own mind up though – go see it on the big screen :)

I thought the movie was excellent. Alfonso Cuaron did an amazing job directing it. I read one of the comments that said tha some action scenes looked as if they were taken straight through and i have to agree thats what it appeared. The camera was almost necer still. Many plot twists made it entertaining. the cinematography was surprising and the set designs were unbelievable. Even though it was an action/thriller there were many funny moments, mortly because of Micheal Caines character. after seeing it, i was motivated to read the book.

I saw it earlier in the year, and have to say it was pretty superb. Though my memory isn’t that great, now I come to remember it I can’t really find much fault with it; The action scenes were highly dramatic, even if there was large-scale bloodshed… but hey, that’s sometimes a good thing, right? In this film I feel it adds to the depressed, ‘final fight for the future of mankind’ feeling that is conveyed, though I did feel that perhaps a little less senseless slaughtering of main characters would have been nice…

The dry humour also suits this mood (which I love, being British and therefore a cynical bastard); Cane’s performance is particularly notable on this front (as always).
The character build-up is suppressed by the sudden ends of a large number of characters but those who survive clearly develop convincingly through the film. The plot is fast-paced enough to keep me entertained right till the last, however the ending, in my opinion, was particularly poor… I shan’t spoil anything but I will say that as a result this film quickly faded from my mind whereas with a powerful ending it could have become one of my personal favourite films.

No, this isn’t a great political masterpiece so don’t go expecting one. If you go to see it looking for the message, it ruins the film. The action, drama, humour, and storyline are all generally excellent in this film and any great political or philosophical incite you may gain from seeing it are a bonus.

Pretty damn good: 8/10

Just to throw my opinion into the mix… I agree with most people here. The movie is worth seeing, at worst. At best (as some people here demonstrate), it is award-worthy. It has some political undertones, but I wouldn’t say it has enough to ruin the experience. In my mind, it’s about as political as V for Vendetta. The cinematography is impressive, mostly shot through the first person. There are some shots that will floor you. They tell a lot of the story implicitly, through actions and dialog, not through lengthy monologues. My only gripe is that the plot can come across as underdeveloped. It feels like the movie is telling you an abridged version of the whole story.

Ultimately, I would recommend the movie. It’s emotional and gritty and real. It’s V for Vendetta meets Aeon Flux, well, if Aeon Flux was good.

I seen this a while back (for once it paid off to be british) and I really enjoyed it, it’s not far fetched or full of non-stop violence and tries to get a point across which makes a nice change. It’s a lot better than some of the tripe out now, not the best film of the year but its bloody good. I’d recommend going to see it, you don’t need to be majorly intrested in politics to understand it and if you dont like it you can at least enjoy Michael Caine’s character.

It was an absolutely beautiful movie. By far, the movie’s strength was in the cinematography. They have simply the most beautiful and the most visceral (emotionally) scenes I have seen in a while, especially considering the holly wood trend to de-emotionalize that kind of killing. The backdrop was perfectly done, it always carried the tone excellently. The plot in and of it self wasn’t special, but the characters really strengthened it. The one real problem is the ending. Abrupt. That’s all I’ll say out of fear of spoilers. Anyway it was definetly worth the money to go see.

I absolutely LOVED this movie and urge everyone to see it. I can’t imagine how anyone would find it boring, but as for underdeveloped, it’s true that we don’t get answers to some plot-related questions. But in the end, those answers matter little and were probably left open so as not to distract from the bigger picture, and to get us thinking for ourselves. As for the impressive effort that went into the making of the film, NPR did an interview with Cuaron regarding one of the longer, continuous (unedited) shots in the movie–it’s fascinating and available online for those who are interested.

Really awesome movie, the concept reminds me a little of Half-Life 2, which by the way, is the awesomest game ever. Do you really trust the opinions of popcorn critics? No offense to the margin of your readership who isn’t completely drawn to “follow the bouncing ball” videos, though.

For a movie, it was alright. Artistically, it was brilliant. The points it was trying to make hit home, the cinematography was well structured and gracefully complimented to story unfolding. The acting… not sensational when it came to some minor characters, but the majority of the acting was spot-on.

If you watch for sheer entertainment alone, flip a coin. Heads, go… Tails, stay home and wait to rent it. Neither will ever really treat you wrong.

If you regard your films like you select your women, your wine, and I pray to god your cheese… Searching for flavor more than kicks, see the movie.

Laugh, cry, love.

Hope this was as enlightening for you as it was pretentiously humor-filled.

I’ll be goign along with the popular sentiment. Bloody brilliant film. The apocalypse from a British point of view. There are a few political viewpoints slipped in, but they’re not overt statements like a Michael Moore movie. It’s all subtle stuff in the bakground, like the various political stickers around town and the video boards.

The cinematogrpahy is wonderful as well. Couple of jawdropping sequences with the tracking camera work. Seemless 10+ minute chase/action sequences. If you saw Blood Diamond and found anything to like in it, you’ll like Children of Men.

Yeah, the setting is pretty realistic, and it’s a different futuristic world than we are used to, but in terms of a movie, it’s not that great. It’s kind of like The Island where the beginning is good, but after that it’s just a bunch of running around. And if you ask me, a movie is more than just cool scenery and nice shots.
