Holy crapola! I’d like to say that’s insane, but ye gods that’s GENIUS!

“Leopold said there are plans to add a music-download kiosk across from the Zoom machine on concourse A.”
-Next they’ll add a docking station to charge them!

I heard about these things a while back but have yet to see one in real life. I bet it would be pretty awesome though lol.

hm. sounds pretty interesting. and awesome! but yea it does seem easy to rob but pretty stupid to try to. think. a person trying to steal the machine or at least one of the things inside. VERY conspicuous.

If they make it out of Plexiglas, it’d be pretty damn hard to break.

Hum…. I wonder if normal people would do what Hawk did if the iPod vending machine took their money. :)

yeah, i see those things in airports, I think to myself, “who has 400 bucks in their pocket for a vending machine” like someone is going to go, “man, I could use a video iPod right now…oh, hey, there’s one! 400 bucks? oh, I wonder if it will give me the correct change…”

I’m sure they take credit cards. Still, you’d be surprised. I did a stint working at the local Apple Store, and there were a notable number of people who came in and bought iPods — sometimes more than one at once — with cash.

Then again, this was in Bellevue, so er. ;)

[Bellevue: wealthy suburb of Seattle, next door to places like Redmond and Medina (home of Bill Gates, etc.), and yes, I still remember Microsoft's discount code since I typed it in so many times. Watching Microsofties walk in and buy high-end laptops, Cinema Screens, Final Cut Studio, etc. was really kinda beautiful.]

…although I can tell I’m slipping when I type Screen instead of Display. Whoops. ;)

Here is my first encounter with them on my Flickr account. I was so jazzed about getting something from it…and the frakkin’ thing dissed me.

Probably for the best. The mini-strip with Hawk in the vending machine? Yeah…guilty…

the idea seems kinda stupid but compared to what people put in vending machines in japan i can see where they got this idea…i mean who would think of underwear in vending machines…i can see beer being put in vending machines, getting carded by a machine is something that people would talk about…lol

Hey, the mall fifteen minutes from where I live has one of those things, it’s pretty cool. I’d be surprised if anyone could pull what Hawk did, though [the reaching up inside, thing, not fitting themselves inside it thing; I've seen that happen.]

There’s TONS of them all over SF. There’s two with in 2 blocks of the flagship Apple store near Union Square. That to me is a little weird. I’m trying to figure out how them make a profit. They don’t charge any more for an ipod than buying directly from apple. The only think I can think is that Apple gives them a % of the sales. I’ve also seen Sony branded vending machines. What’s next… BMW? Yes I would like that M3 please…

They make a profit very easily. See, instead of paying 15-20 employees to work at a store, they pay one man with a truck money to drive around loading and fixing up the machines.
Really if anything the machines are just another form of advertising to reinforce the apple name.
Its kind of ironic. There is one of these Apple Machines on the first floor of the local Macy’s, by the Mall entrance, about a 100yds down the mall, is The Apple Store. Redundant? maybe. Convenient? Yes it is.

HECK YEAH! Finally no more tricky salesmen… no more commercials… just a one stop store where you see what you want on a screen and buy it and out comes the car.
