This has been floating around for a bit, and I figured I’d post about it because frankly, I find it fascinating. For a culture that is so hard-working and socially conservative in some ways, they are also remarkably open, strange, and kinky in others.

I’m referring to Love Hotels, the new photo book by Misty Keasler. In it, you’ll find photographs of some of the most out-of-this world rooms in the (in)famous Japanese Love Hotels, which are essentially - quoting the Wired article - “a place for couples to enjoy anonymous, uninterrupted sex. Politician and secretary, teacher and student, husband and hooker — all are welcome, as long as they pay in cash and leave when the time limit is up.” Yeah, wow.

The photos are just literally documentation of empty love hotel rooms. They’re fascinating in how elaborate and bizarre some of them are. There’s a few rooms that just make me wonder about the kind of person that would occupy them.

Incidentally, I also found a photo of Hawk’s Honeymoon Suite:

As long as your workplace is okay with the subject matter, all the links themselves are totally safe for work.

You should also check out PinkBox at http://www.pinkboxjapan.com

It’s NSFW but she actually went behind the sex club culture in japan, and it’s truly amazing.

Did you find this stuff while doing research for the next issue of AG? Is this why Eve wants to stay in Japan?

I gotta admit… these places can be fun :) Living in Japan is definitely a highlight of my life. … but Wired forgot one group that can go… actual couples :D

The newer ones now are essentially “staffless”, so you go in, press a button for the room, go to the room… as you walk in, a machine on the wall starts to talk to you and asks to deposit $… so you do… nice thing is, you can keep adding cash to stay longer if you want… the average places has “rest” and “stay” rates with “rest” stays lasting 2 - 3 hrs usually.

I love this country :D

I saw this article in wired last month but the magazine version didn’t included the pictures. Thanx for the link.

Actually, depending on the hotel, and the place you are, you can stay overnight for a flat rate. It depends on what time you go, but typically the daytime/afternoon is rated per hour or whatever, while the nighttime is anywhere from $40 dollars up, depending on the town you live in. The funny thing is, they are pretty comfortable, and often offer karaoke, videogames, etc. depending on your circumstances, it’s sometimes cheaper to stay in a love hotel than a regular business one (and definitely cheaper than a japanese style hotel.
@CanadaGaijin; you’re not the only Canadian living here that reads AG anymore. よろしく! ;)

Always good to find some canucks about… and yes… I agree… sometimes cheaper than business hotels (and larger in size than a capsule hotel! :D )

@Raphah -> Japanese is a fun Language :D I find it much easier than when I learned French in Grade-school. I still speak very pathetically, but I have fun and don’t mind the people laughing at my mistakes cuz I speak funny :P Just pick and start with the basics :D 私は[insert name]です. Reminds me of my bedroom as a teenager when the alumium foil look was a cheap way to decorate a room. Look cool in the winter but uncomfortable in the summer.

It’s the carousel room that gets me… “if you can’t get a child to come in then you can look at the gleeful faces of children in the pictures and mastubate”…. fabulous..

Thats not even starting to get kinky. Checkout the Snowman chain of love hotels in Kansai, or I’ve got a link to a Tokyo chain that does (and this is weird) medical themed rooms. I’m talking hospital beds, examination chairs, the whole kit and kaboodle.

I prefer just a king sized bed and massive jacuzzi ;)
