Heheh, that made me laugh. I can’t believe I missed seeing it, though! That’s totally an Ohio news station, man- I should have known about it. They play commercials on every station. ^^; Oh, well. I would have been bored, anyway.

Truth be told, I’m a teenager, and I can’t understand 75% of what that crap is, but I don’t think it’s the lingo that’s dangerous, it’s the people who use it improperly. Like guns. Yeah. :D That’d make a good bumper sticker.

OH NOES l3375p33k 1z ou7 70 637 j00

They had something exactly like this on one of the stations in my city. They were just as wrong about it as this thing is.

Besides, I think there are some parents out there that are WAY too involved with their kids lives. :\

Bwahaha, there’s a similar news article on the wikipedia page about the dangers of leet.

Anyone else notice the similarity between “Dangerous code” with leet, and ‘devil words’ with rock and roll, and before that 70’s style, such as groovy and such? (Calvin and Hobbes, anyone?)

If you feel the need to obsessively monitor your kids, you are far more dangerous to them then they could ever be.

“Oh noes, they speak in gibberish; they must be planning the downfall of civilization as we know it!! Let’s kill them!”
“Actually…that was Chinese. We’re in Chinatown.”
“Oh…nevermind then.”

Since when was LOL considered 1337? What the heck does NIFOC and GYPO mean (I have honestly never seen the majority of those examples in my days traversing the net, and I’m a WebDiver dangit).

I wonder if the parents recognize any acronym? What about military ones like FUBAR and SNAFU? Better yet, hows this going to affect Tech Support. “IP? You sexual predator you!”

::facepalms:: The stupid things small-town stations do. At least Ohio’s a blue state now. As for l337 being a dangerous code, any creative-minded person can look at a screen and puzzle out most of what’s going on. My mother, who never touches computers unless she absolutely has to, managed to read all of the l337 dude’s dialogue in MT (and had a blast, by the way).

I agree that parents who don’t give their kids the independence to make mistakes are the real danger, but it’s partly the fault of alarmist programming like this that makes parents paranoid in the first place. Instead of reporting psuedo “close-to-home” pieces like this, how about some world news instead? Keeping one’s eyes focused only on one’s neighborhood and city will make you blind to the rest of the world under the pretext of “addressing the issues”.

Comment by Kappa
2006-11-28 00:38:47

Given your assumption, this should make you take notice. That “small-town station” is WBNS-10 out of Columbus, the capital city. These aren’t just some rural county rednecks out for more soundbite commentary on the dangers of the outside world.

I’ve never been big into 1337, but it scares me when the self appointed cultural “experts” get rattled enough by a new concept to begin attacking it. It proves that as a culture, we still have a long ways to go.

Comment by SnowRaven
2006-11-28 05:51:14

It should also be mentioned that not only is it the capitol city of my home state, but according to the latest census, it is (if memory serves) the 17th largest city in the United States in terms of population.

That makes things just a little more frightening.

wow, I wish the media wasn’t so ignorant about the internet and gaming and such. looking at the video I see about only two sources of information, some teenager who was probably payed to say the things he did about using acronyms, not “leetspeak” as they would like to call it, and this ‘cyber investigator’, a glorified point-and-clicker with an opinion . I’m sure some Executive producer just saw their kid saying LMAO or LOL and got overcurious. Media, please quit trying to scare us.

Why did it have to be a news cast from a station in the state I live -_-* This is almost as bad as a piece a saw on the news last night where they were hounding a airport cop for parking his truck in a 30 minute zone during his shifts. When he told them hey I get free parking from the airport leave me be, the news crew went to city hall and reported the guy for parking there. How is this even news? To me its just some guy with a camera harrassing a city employee for nothing.

you know, gamers and hackers (and even some of us that aren’t quite so involved) should start coding to eachother in binary, then we really might make people afraid… that their kids are turning into ROBOTS! Muhahaha.

But seriously, it’s just yet another dialect of english. In Canada alone i can’t count how many different ways there are to speak, yet we all understand eachother?

Parents really should take the media with a grain of salt.

I can’t say anything but WTF?! Come on, if any of these persons knew anything, they would know that this isn’t a code language, at least not against parents. It’s just a fun way of communicating over the internet. Some of what they showed wasn’t even leetspeak. Stuff like lol are just abbrevations, made to make the written language faster. “But oh god, think of the children!”.
