The iphone… ah, perfection in cellular phone. I’m afraid not. We’ve all seen the rokr, a candy bar shaped… ugly phone that has itunes capable of holding 100 songs or so.
So this is what I’ve heard about the iphone… another candy bar. I hate to say this but the last time I owned a candy bar phone was in 10th grade. Its personal pref but… I mean look around are you using a candy bar phone? Yeah I thought not.
Next rumor. GSM only. Boo His. I’m on a cdma network, its called Verizon, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it. Its probably the best network in and around DC, also I feel that it is the largest network, member wise.
So what do I suggest? I’d like to see the full screen 80 gig iPod capable of phone calls. Why you ask? Well, why not? I have an mp3 capable phone, I think integrating the two would be a logical progression and also would eliminate another device that I have to carry around. That’s just my opinion. Then maybe I’ll buy it.

So is this you’re wish list? What you intend to buy or is this a suggestion box?
Question, I’ve heard Macs can run WoW, which I personally love, but I’ve heard that the video isn’t that great. Is this true or do my friends just hate Macs?
It depends on your Mac and Your GPU. It runs great on my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro… It runs great on the 17, 20 and 24″ iMac at the store I work at, and it runs well on the 2005 model PowerBooks and PowerMacs. (Havent tried the iMacs from then).
The video is a little jumpy on Mac Mini’s, iBooks and Macbooks, but not ‘terrible’. If graphics are a big thing, save up the extra bit for a MBP, iM or MP.
And WoW can run on Mac just like it can on A windows PC. It’s actively developed for Mac by blizzard. You could also run it on the Windows XP side of things if you’re bootcamping it up.
Answer; Your friends may just hate macs or be over exaggerating.
I used to run it on an older Powerbook G4 (1.2Ghz) with 1.25Gb of RAM and a 64Mb video card and it ran fine - sometimes chugged in high population areas like Ironforge but never in a dungeon or out in the regular gameworld.
Yeah WoW runs fine on a Mac. (I have a 2003 eMac and it does chug a bit so I am thinking of upgrading.) HOWEVER, if you want to use Ventrillo (like most guilds do) you need the owner to uses a specific Codec… which I have not been able to convince my guild leaders to do. So, um, yeah, it runs just watch out for third party mods and addons.
WoW runs just fine on my iBook G4. It’s a 2006 model, though the graphics lag sometime, but I feel it’s more due to the communication with the servers than my hardware. I’d say just make sure you get one with beefy memory and a hunky CPU and you’ll be fine. :) I’ve got 1.5 GB of RAM and a 1.42 GHz processor.
Like I said, it runs fine and I was told it runs faster than some PCs. o.o If you want a screenshot, I’ll nab one the next time I’m on and show it to ya. It’s not all that different from the PC screenshots though. *shrug*
I’ve heard that the iPhone comes in 2 models, one GSM and the other 3G. Also I’ve heard that the 3G is more like a PDA, with wireless internet integration, a mobile version of OSX and can fly you into space with it’s magical rocket wings.
there’s an it’s in that last comment that should really be ‘its’
Well the choice of GSM network is mainly for them to build only one type of phone, for the entire world. It saves Apple a whole lot in engineering costs to make it for only one network. Currently, GSM is the principal network in Europe, Asia and Africa. While there are GSM providers in the States (i.e. Cingular), CDMA is the predominant one mainly because it was there first. The only difference between the GSM networks is the frequency used in different regions.
iPhoto, iCal, Addressbook, Mail, iChat, iTunes integration would be the big thing for me…
Imagine having your bluetooth headset on, and when you get a call, the music quietens and your phone show’s the Adressbook entry for the caller. Reject the call and your music goes to normal volume, accept the call and it’s paused until you get off the call.
iPhoto integration would be great if its a good cameraphone, AB and iCal integration would not be that hard. The interface would no doubt be crisp and easy to use… I would try it, at the very least.
I don’t know about the States, but here in the UK, LOADS of people use “candybar” phones. The K750i must be the most popular phone in years. I had a flip phone, but the hinge went on it after about a year, whereas my current phone is still going strong.
Absolutely agree. I have a candybar phone because I know myself - if it’s got moving parts (hinge, slider) I’m going to idly fiddle with it and eventually break it. Frankly, candybar phones are smaller, as well - you only need two layers of case material as opposed to four for a flip phone.
I owned a flip phone once, and I didn’t like it. Seriously, candy bar is the way to go. Boo flip. Yay candy!
few things (speaking as a previous rep)
(A) - CDMA is the best…ever. go verizon
(B) - Candy bar phones are the best structure wise…flips are ok, just don’t buy a “slider” phone. Especially from Kyocera.
(C) - Go verizon
Last time I checked (2001), most of the cell towers around DC were operated by Sprint. Not trying to dig on Verizon, but there’s a huge misconception about how CDMA technology works in the states (and Japan and South Korea are probably the only other 2 countries that use the technology). The two providers lease out each other’s towers. Some states like Florida have a much higher Verizon user base but no actual Verizon-operated hardware- the converse is true in California. The hardware itself, physically, is nearly identical as well.
“It’s the network” indeed.
Not digging on Verizon though- I’ve been a customer for almost a decade now. The cellular deficiencies and lack of any kind of working mobile broadband (3G) is the fault of the FCC and not any actual cellular provider. Kinda how it’s taken them since 1984 to turn off SDTV.
I use a candy bar phone, I prefer them, personal preference. Although I feel an actual ipod with phone ability is not so good, anybody seen the new james bond film and that white phone she has??? ugly and too big. Now an iPod nano with phone ability, that works.
using the navi wheel for texting would be odd, but work able, and B&O do a phone with a navi wheel type volume control. and numbered keypad aroudn the edges.
Just my opion…candy bar good.
iPod too big for a phone.
iPod nano ok for phone.
It really is a question of globalization. If Apple wanted to sell its phone to the US, Korea and Japan, sure, made a CDMA version.
But if they wanted to sell it to the world, make it GSM. Cingular isn’t the only GSM provider in the states, I’m a T-Mobile subscriber.
I’m pretty sure if they come out with any phone in the near future it’ll be either tri-or quad-band GSM.
If they wanted to charge way too much for it, they could make it GSM & CDMA in the same box. But that’s just nuts.
And what’s so bad about candy bar phones? The current smartphone market is entirely candy-bar. And that’s where phones are going. That or VOIP.
Gavin, I agree with you to a certain extent but I feel that with phones, and i use that term loosely, like the sidekick or trios are just as big, if not bigger then an ipod, plus it wouldn’t be a click wheel design, at least I hope to god it isn’t.
BdeRWest, globalization be dammed. Most of the cellular market is in the US, China, Japan and Europe. I feel that releasing the phone as only GSM will hinder its sale. Look how popular the razr is, granted it is a piece of crap but it has both a cdma and a gsm model.
Actually, candy bar phones are very in-style in Europe. I’ve heard that they’re much more prevalent than flip phones.
I work for a large unnamed cell phone company, and have spent a lot of time comparing GSM vs CDMA : the company I work for uses GSM tech, where as my home provider used CDMA.
The truth of the matter is that while CDMA is pretty reliable you don’t have a lot of the versatility that you have with GSM (namely SIM cards so you don’t have to have the store program every phone you use) and the data tech - GSM- GPRS- UMTS > UMTS is huge - it is very vary fast data speeds and allows for things like simultaneous voice and data (so things like Video conferencing on your cell phone are a reality)
Overall the benefits of the GSM branch of tech out preforms the CDMA in pretty much every way. Also GSM is becoming the global standard as CDMA and TDMA are being phased out most places where cell phones are used.
after spending all this time comparing personally I’d have to say GSM is the way to go.. that and I want to take videos of stuff wile talking on my phone while listening to tunes ect… I’m a tech freak, and can’t wait for my provider to change up it’s tech and gimme a new phone.
I was just wondering, is there any proof yet that Apple is actually making an iPhone? It would be sweet and I’d go straight out an buy one, but there’s nothing on the Apple site indicating that there are even plans. Anything about the phone I’ve been able to find through google is all in rumor and blog sites. Nothing offical. Can someone point me to a statement from Apple about the iPhone? I’d like to know if it’s a hoax or not.
i wish you sayd it on the Skype Live comment about the iPhone.
So many listeners so many questions.I wouldnt buy it anyway.
I have a GSM so i dont need one.Only more money i dont have to spend.
You have no idea what the actual device is but you’ll still make claims on its quality based soley on rumors? Good job. Maybe you should wait for, I dunno, facts before you write an article that makes you sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Pointy Things… what is the value of your comment? What facts do you have that you fail to share with us?
I made two claims, its a candy bar and gsm only. The rest of it was my opinion on those rumors. I fail to recognize how I sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about when throughout the article I mention that it is rumor. Nothing is stopping the 21,000,000 other people commenting on the rumors of the iPhone.
At last check I’m able to express any thoughts or feelings I have about whatever subject I deem worthy of my rantings. You on the other hand are just rude. Way to ruin my morning.
I personally love the GSM only part. I haven’t researched it much myself, but my Signals and Systems professor says its vastly superior to CDMA. But given our history, can you name any other way to force us away from a crappy technology to a good one, short of only offering new tech? Think Windows95/2k/XP. Think the metric system.
Cort, your signals & systems professor couldn’t be more wrong. CDMA has much improved SNR over any TDMA implementation (GSM included) and most CDMA implementations have very sophisticated multipath capabilities as well. Simply put, it can pack more orthogonal channels into a given band, and it can do it with added security thanks to the pseudo-random code modulation. GSM is an old TDMA-based technology. All 3G standards are based on CDMA technology. The only advantage GSM has is that it doesn’t take much silicon to implement, so it’s cheaper, but it’s also much inferior.
I had a candybar phone. It was….er, chunky? I want to say chunky. Bulkey? Cheap? Oh yeah! Shitty! The damn thing fell apart like a year after I got it. Literally fell apart. But my new flipphone is still crappy. The front pops off, its not supposed to, but it does anyway. Remember when the damn Razar came out (a tad off topic X3) it was like $400. The iPhone is like $600. No way can I afford it sadly -_-; but if I could, then you better believe I would buy it. I wouldn’t throw away my iPod mini. Its lovley pixely ^w^
