This letter from a Marine in Iraq has been circulating lately, and it recently got printed in Time magazine. It’s illuminating to hear the story from someone actually there, who doesn’t have a political agenda.

I heard much the same story from a friend of mine when he returned from Iraq.
At any rate, I wonder if we could get that Iraqi mayor to run for office where I live?
As a military man, myself, I applaud this man as much for what he said as what he didn’t say. I’ve been over there. I’ve heard and seen much of the classified intel. What struck me the most was how he truly captured so much of life over there without ever divulging any information that might be considered “sensitive”, let alone classified. It’s tough and for that, as much, as for his frank characterization, I salute him (he’s an officer, so I gotta. :P ).
Ananth, for one thanks for you alowing anyone who reads applegeeks and your blogs see that letter. Many people only belive what the media tells them but to find someone that will point something like this letter out thank you. I understand where this officer comes from, many of my friends are in and have been in Iraq, so has my sister. They always tell us the worst part about this war is the american media just looking for something to rip at the military for, why can’t they just understand we are doing what we are trained to do? Thank you Ananth and anyone who was touched by this letter like myself.

Respect is due, both to our Marines, and to you, Ananth, for linking this letter. One of the worst things about this war in Iraq is how little we actually hear from the grunts that are actually on the line, putting rounds downrange for all of us back here. Ooo-rah, Ananth.
This letter is one of the most frank and truthful accounts on the war in iraq that i’ve read/heard since the war began. And how he puts everything into perspective like that, almost makes people who read it like they can get a little taste of what’s really going on over there.
Canada is having multiple campaigns and petitions for stopping our forces going into iraq for anything other than peacekeeping, and i agree with it. If anyone else here does they should look into how they can voice their opinion in public protest of the war, and how the US has handled itself so far.
I hope this soldier and his squad make it back, just so someone can shake his hand for that letter.
Hear hear to the letter! It’s sad that we no longer have such reporting from the ground instead of falsities from the govt and the media.
A true letter indeed. I had to giggle at the “Coolest Insurgent Act”. It was just too funny. This is the truth that needs to be heard. Luckly my brother isn’t in Iraq anymore. Much respect and love goes out to both the American and British armed forces.
Everyone has an agenda. His agenda is that he doesn’t want to be there. ;)
We need more of this in the world. Honest facts from the people who live them. After 3 years of weeding through news reports trying to divide fact from agenda (both left and right), this letter is what I’ve been waiting for. Applegeeks, once again, proves it self as something more than just a web comic. Keep it up guys.
Thanks for linking this letter. It was worth the read. I just realised alot of people don’t appreciate the work done by soldiers. Its truly hard work.
Bravo!
