Haha, the punchline comes courtesy of a conversation I had with Archer.
And Haruki Murakami is an author someone recommended to me … I recently picked up The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Haven’t started it yet, but I’m excited.

Haruki Murakami is a great Japanese writer. I think you’ll enjoy his work a lot. He’s actually one of the better known Japanese writers out there. I’m sure you’ll find something to love about the book you’re about to read. He just seems to make everything flow right. Enjoy the Wind Up Bird Chronicle!
I read 5 of his books an they have all been great. I must admitt that I didnt get the AGlite punchline at first :D
akward?
If you’re into sci-fi, _Hard-Boiled Wonderland at the End of the World_ might be a good one of his to check out.
:O Haruki Murakami is a wonderful author, if you like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, Kafka of the Shore would be another book of his that you’d probably like, its one of my favorites. ^_^
Agreed, I’ve read many of his books and Kafka by the Shore I found a cut above the rest.
I loved Kafka by the Shore.
sigh. nobody mentions that they think his translator is amazing. everyone just talks about how great he is. his work and his translated work are markedly different. cheers to ethnocentralism.
本物読め!
The translator is crazy good. While I lack the ability to read the works in origional Japanese, I think that the fact that there are puns and word plays in the books amaze me.
Actually, I think his translators are amazing. I’ve been meaning to pick up Jay Rubin’s “Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words” for a while, but I want to read all of the books he talks about in it first. Having said that, his books are translated by several different people, and I often wonder how much the translator influences the tone of the writing (the lightness of ‘Sputnik Sweetheart’ versus the almost dull ‘Dance Dance Dance’ – though when I say dull, I don’t mean it was boring to read, more like the characters and the world in it didn’t want to be read).
(said in a Jeff Foxworthy voice)
If you can spell “Haruki Murakami” flawlessly…but misspell “Dr. Seuss”…
…ya might be a Japanophile.
… oops! Thanks, that’s a little embarrassing.
Wind Up Bird Chronicle is totally worth it, if only for the fun parts with May and the war chapters. There’s a great scene with Boris you’ll never forget. You’ll see what I mean later. : )
Enjoy the book!
Hm, yes, Haruki Murakami is great. Terribly surreal, yet wit h a real edge that makes it both interesting and slightly unnerving at times.
Murakami is a great author. Better than Chuck Palahniuk (not that he’s bad). My favorite is “Dance Dance Dance.”
I’m happy you guys mentioned him. Hopefully more people will go read him now.
Yes! And the prequel, “A Wild Sheep Chase.” Both excellent.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found very many of his other books. The only other one I’ve read… Something about Sputnik in the title? That’s embarrassing that I can’t remember the title, but it’s good.
Wasn’t it called Sputnik Sweetheart?
I just finished reading “South of the Border, West of the Sun,” probably the least surreal novel he’s ever done, like a Tokyo Casablanca. Pretty cool.
i read green eggs and ham . . .and by read i mean you know i watched it . . . i keep saying im going to read it though one day
Yes, Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
I do have to admit that Haruki Murakami is fantastic, as is his translator (much like how I give Walter Kaufmann almost as much credit as Nietzsche). The only thing I’ve read of his (Murakami) is “Nowegian Wood”, and though it was a bit more gratuitous in sexual content than I was ready for, it was still an amazing story and looking back very well written.
i’ve begun reading haruki murakami a week ago. when i saw the cover of “hardboiled wonderland and the end of the world” it caught my eye and i bougt it right away. right now i finished the third book and start reading the next. it’s so good, my girlfriend is getting jealous.
If you liked “hardboiled wonderland”, and you’ve been reading Applegeeks, then you might find the anime series “Haibane Renmei” interesting.
The creator of “Haibane Renmei”, Yoshitoshi ABe, has openly acknowledged that he was inspired by “hardboiled wonderland”. Furthermore, “Haibane Renmei” is an excellent series, some of the best the medium has to offer.
NO! DON’T START WITH TEH BIIIRDZ!!!1! But seriously, I would start with “The Wild Sheep Chase.” I personally enjoyed that work of his far more.
“Dance Dance” was mighty good as well. A very good author though and easily one of my favorites.
I really hope you like Haruki man. Wind up bird isnt really the first book of his i would reccommend to start with. Kafka on the shore though is amazing as is Wild Sheep and Dance dance. The only Haruki i just couldnt get to grips with was After the Quake but that is a failing on my part and not his. But he is my favorite author and i hope you enjoy him too.
cheers!
