So I finally swung by Hawk’s house to check out the Cintiq. All I have to say is, what the fuck. I’m so pissed at myself for not coming by to check it out sooner. Hawk had been telling me all about it, and I think in the back of my head I had been thinking, “Well, it sounds cool, but it can’t be that cool.” Man oh man, was I wrong.
There is almost no learning curve, because once you sit down with the tablet, it’s like drawing on paper. Hawk had me fool around with Alias Sketchbook Pro, which is meant for TabletPC, but it adapts beautifully to the Cintiq. Drawing with it feels a lot like drawing with a pencil - it responds to pressure and tilt very much like the real thing. After Alias, we pulled my file into Painter and fooled around with it. The Cintiq adapts especially nicely to Painter - since Painter is so deeply based in real media, being able to interact with the tools like you are using the real thing is a great advantage. I did a quickie sketch of Shannon … I have to say, though, someone who sits down and learns the ins and outs of this equipment will be able to do some amazing things.

And here’s a picture of me messing with it - the lighting in Hawk’s room is sweet.
