Ahhhhhhhh

In other, less disconcerting news, I’ve beenlistening to a lot of Coheed and Cambria lately,at the recommendation of Archer. They are prettycool … I think they got labeled as “progressiveemo”. Their albums supposedly tell an on-goingstory, and they have some comicbooks out thatexpand on the story and accompany each of thealbums, I think.

… is the name of anarticle over at CNN. It talks about howbloggers, among other things, make it harder forbig media outlets to “sit on a story”. It’s afascinating article - gotake a look if you feel so inclined. ^_^Here’s a quote:

Glaser noted the importance of bloggers intearing down CBS News’ election season story aboutPresident Bush’s service in the Texas Air NationalGuard. The constant barrage of questions andcharges from the Web kept heat on the networkuntil it admitted a mistake in relying on whatturned out to be fake documents.

So my friend Archer from high school, the one who invented the Shotgun game, I hung out with him today, and he hitched me a ride out to my house. I was meeting my parents there for Diwali. I’m getting off-topic.

We went to the Apple store. Our friend Marc works there, so he told Archer there was a job opening. We ended up spending a few hours in the store, just hanging out and catching up (I hadn’t seen either of these guys in months). I met Rob, who is a reader, and although I didn’t get to talk to him much, he seemed pretty cool, so I just wanted to give a shout-out to him here. I /think/ he’s (one of?) the resident “Mac Genius”(s), which basically means he’s one of the guys at the store who knows Macs inside and out.

I really like how simply the Mac store is laid out - it’s almost like they let the products do the visual work of selling themselves by making the furniture plain.

The worst part of the trip was seeing all the iPods out on the tables again. I’m not a fan of the Minis at all, but the regular iPods are awesome, and they’ve gotten the new models in that display photos. Every time I visit the Apple Store, I want an iPod a little more. That price tag owns me every time, though.

I also got to play with the massive monitor they have set up there - it’s just huge. I love it. There’s a screensaver with fish, and if you mounted it in a wall behind a sheet of plexiglass, I’d swear you could trick people into thinking it was a real aquarium. It looks /good/.

So the Apple Store is a fun place. Moving on because I’m brutally tired …

Today is also Diwali! Important holiday for Hindus. That’s why I made the extra effort to make the trip home - it’s good to spend this holiday with your family. My parents came in from New York this morning, so I was home to meet them when they arrived. It was good times. ^_^

Happy Diwali!

EDIT: Ellen tells me that City of Heroesapparently discourages and bans names andappearances of existing hero characters. So …this is a little odd, then. They’re suing becausethere’s a capability to mimic?

Superherohype.comhas a link to anarticle put out by the Associated Press. It’sabout Marvel suing two firms responsible for Cityof Heroes. Apparently they’re ticked that peoplehave characters that look like Marvel properties,and/or that people are roleplaying as Marvelproperties.

At first I thought it was pretty lame, but readingthrough the Associated Press article, Marvel issuing because:

The company singles out a game feature forcreating “a gigantic, green, ’science-basedtanker’-type hero that moves and behaves nearlyidentically” to the “Hulk.” Players can alsocreate a “mutant-based” hero powers and a costumenearly identical to Marvel’s “Wolverine,”according to the suit.

The New York-based company also took issue withthe ability of players to go so far as to nametheir superhero creations after Marvel comic bookcharacters.

Marvel claims the firms’ are responsible becausethe game is played on servers operated by thecompanies, raising the question of whether acompany is responsible for their customers’actions on its computer server.

Marvel also claims the companies have disruptedits “existing and future” business prospects forlicensing its characters in video games similar to”City of Heroes.”

… and I could sort of understand that, though”disrupting” seems like a strong word. It’s notlike they kidnapped the Hulk or Wolverine. Sucks, anyway. All the features described in City ofHeroes seem very much like reverent nods tocomics’ roots. But there’s that saying about theeye of the beholder …
