Matt from Mac Hall linked to this, which is a transcript of a meeting between TedKoppel of Nightline and Jon Stewart of the DailyShow. It’s an interesting read. Slate hasan article about the encounter, and I thoughtit was an interesting analysis of the whole thing. To sum up, the author thinks the interviewreflects the rift between two generations. Here,I’ll just quote straight from the article:
What was at stake in this debate between twomen, a generation apart in age (Stewart is 42,Koppel 64), both of whom host some version of alate-night daily talk show on current events?Clearly, Koppel’s beef went far beyond thequestion of whether most folks who watch The DailyShow do so for yuks. (As a long-term viewer, Iwould contend that of course they do, and thatanyone who can’t tell the difference betweenStewart’s out-there satire and actualinvestigative reporting is too dumb to understandthe “real” news anyway.) No, the battle of thenetwork anchors was about nothing less than thefuture of TV journalism.
It’s really a reasonable interpretation. Whatbothers me, then, is the unwillingness of Koppelto listen to Stewart, and to continue the debate. The Nightline anchorman just cuts Stewart off.Furthermore, Koppel was scheduled to appear on theDaily Show the following Thursday, but nevershowed - presumably because, when not on his show,he wouldn’t have the power to end the interview. That sounds like a big message to me - one guywilling to talk, and one guy’s refusal to talk. OrI may be reaching. I hope I am, anyway.
Since I have already revealed that iheart jon stewart, I’m going to linkto an archive of celebrity interview videos thatComedy Central keeps. The description of theBill O’Reilly interview made me grin: “BillO’Reilly stops by and Jon threatens to cut his ownmic off.” And actually, if anyone gets them towork (because I sure couldn’t), drop me a line andlet me know. I’ve tried in both Firefox and IE,and it just won’t load up the videos.
